May 25 to May 29, 2026 | Online
Participation is restricted to advanced Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty (within 3 years of their Ph.D). There are no restrictions based on citizenship, country of study, or country of employment. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and fields of study, especially neighboring institutions in the Middle East, Africa, and the wider Global South, particularly those with interest in computational communication science. About 25-30 participants will be invited. Participants are expected to fully attend and participate in the entire program.
The Summer Institute aims to bring together computational social scientists across all levels of technical experience. Participants with less experience with social science research will be expected to complete additional readings in advance of the Institute, and participants with less experience coding will be expected to complete SICSS boot camp.
We evaluate applicants based on several key dimensions: 1) the likelihood they will benefit from participation; 2) alignment with our commitment to inclusivity (specifically applicants based in or researching the Middle East, Africa, and Global South); 3) the relevance of their research and teaching to computational social science; 4) their contributions to public goods, such as open-source software or public datasets; and 5) their potential to contribute to the peer learning experience and spread CSS to new intellectual communities. We also account for career stage and previous educational opportunities.
Applicants must fill this form.

Yes, but not at the same time. For example, you can apply to SICSS-Sharjah, and then if you are not accepted you can apply to one of the other locations if it has a later deadline. However, you cannot have an applications under review at two locations simultaneously.
Unfortunately, no. Every year we have more applicants than we can accept, and we would like everyone to have a chance to participate in SICSS once before we allow folks to participate twice.
You can host a partner location of the Summer Institutes of Computational Social Science (SICSS) at your university, company, NGO, or government agency.
